Persuasion by Jane Austen
I love this book, the story, the writing. It has some excellent commentary on the bourgeoisie of the 18th century. Perhaps more importantly, it is a great love story. It isn't a happy book; it is definitely more subdued.
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
This book is a collection of journal entries written by an old and dying reverend to his very young son. It is subsequently the story of his life, and intertwined is a story in the background of Jack Boughton. It is incredibly well written and has such a beautiful commentary on Christianity.
Home by Marilynne Robinson
The story of Jack Boughton, and accompaniment to Gilead. Jack is known in the first novel as a troublemaker and prodigal son. This beautiful story is written as a parallel to Gilead. It is this incredible story of what makes up our desire to believe in a God, and coming to terms with how to reconcile ones life to God. It is all about repentance and forgiveness, and then there is this beautiful interaction between parent and child I think we've all dealt with before.
A Ring of Endless Light by Madeleine L'Engle
I've always been a fan of L'Engle's writing, but this book is my absolute favorite. It has a lot of great insight into how our actions affect others, Christianity and belief in God, and family support during difficult times. There's also a bit of a love story as well.
